| Dijla Al-Rekabi is originally
from Iraq. She immigrated to Canada in late
1996. Prior to that and after the 1991 Gulf
War, she and her family spent about 6 years
in a socially isolated refugee camp located
on the border between Iraq and Saudi Arabia.
In June 2006 Dijla obtained her double degrees
in Linguistics and Sociology with Honors from
the University of Calgary. Dijla is now a Student
Service Coordinator at the University of Calgary
and a Diversity and Learning Support Advisor
with the Calgary Board of Education. Dijla has
a wide range of interests starting with human
rights, social justice, the United Nations High
Commission for Refugees’s role in handling humanitarian
crises, Arabic poetry and literature.
