The Golden Beret Award

Call for Nominations

The Calgary International Spoken Word Festival is thrilled to present the third annual Golden Beret Award as part of the 2009 festival. The Golden Beret Award will be given to a Canadian spoken word artist who has made a substantial contribution to the development of the discipline, through their own writing/performance works, and their involvement in the community at large.

The 2008 Golden Beret Award was presented to Calgarian Sarah Murphy, for her lifelong dedication to Spoken Word and contributions to grassroots activism.

Spoken word artists and/or friends interested in submitting for this soon-to-be-prestigious award are invited to send a one page letter via snail (address below), or on-line (Click Here) The deadline is January 15, 2008.

The selection committee (comprised of four members of the business and artistic communities) will evaluate candidates based on the following qualities: originality of creative process, mastery of the genre, innovation, quality of writing, use of new technologies, contribution to community and openness to diverse voices.

The winner of the third Golden Beret Award will be invited to present their work at the 2009 Calgary International Spoken Word Festival in April, where the award will be announced.

The Calgary Spoken Word Society, which presents the Calgary International Spoken Word Festival, is a non-profit organization whose mandate is to showcase local, national & international spoken word artists; to present culturally diverse works; to offer innovative and progressive approaches to literacy; and to give voice to under-represented communities.
