Melanie Haywood

Known primarily as a dancer, Melanie Haywood proved she has something to say when she took her first audience by surprise in 2002 at "Floetry Friday". In this open-mic, free-for-all atmosphere she developed her unique and expressive style of flo.

Influenced by the urban rhythms of her dance world and inspired by the passions of her everyday existence, Melanie moves thought and emotion through flos that engage audience on a personal level. This year, she was introduced to Calgary's Spoken Word scene. At her Slam competition debut in March 2006, she found herself going all the way to the finals with her dynamic and expressive style of performance.

Melanie is the co-founder and co-director of C.Stylz, a dance collective representing Calgary’s urban scene.  She has taught classes for Decidedly Jazz Danceworks and recently started her own dance classes at the Currie Barracks.  Melanie continues to follow her passion for creative expression because for her, dance expresses what the mind cannot and words express what movement alone cannot.

Connect

Connect
Your body and spirit
Can you hear it?
The way the music
Controls my body
I’m no longer a dancer
I’m just visual sounds
Every movement
Explains
The beat
The rhythm
The feeling
Of the song
No longer
Am I dancer
Cuz a dancer
Moves to the music
But I
I exist

Only if the music does.
